    1. Just plain brilliant. The author takes we use in English and shows how they came from names and words in Greek & Roman mythology. She also tells the stories of the particular myths and includes quotations from a wide variety of children's picture books and novels that incorporate each represented word. I found the whole thing to be clever and fascinating and attractive, and Gareth Hinds' illustrations definitely add to the text. This book would be useful in a variety of units, including lang [...]

    2. I found this wonderful book while searching for books for the 4th grade Common Core Curriculum. Oh, My, Gosh! This is a beautiful, well-written, organized, and interesting book! My undergraduate degree is in English, so I thougt I knew mythology. Well, this book taught me a lot. It not only tells myths and while telling them defines and explains characters, but it also teaches vocabulary and how we have come to use words from mythology in our everyday life. Words like Panic, Pandora, and MANY mo [...]

    3. Lunge-Larsen tells the stories behind words used in modern language that come from Greek and Roman myths. Illustrations are eye-catching with detail and cartoon dialogue.Did you know that such words from janitor to grace, to echo, to narcissism, all cine from myths, Lunge-Larsen defines each word and provides a modern example - many times from children's lit. There's a lot of supplemental back material with an author's note and a chart that explains the Greek and Latin names for gods and goddesse [...]

    4. Beautiful illustrations. I like the set up. Chapters start with word and definition and allusion from YA or middle grade novel. Rest of the chapter is Greek/Roman god or goddess etc that has a story that gets beat meaning to the root of the word at the beginning of the chapter.

    5. The amazing book “Gifts from the Gods” written by Lise Lunge-Larsen takes the reader to greek mythology. The author gives very specific information on every myth and character in Greek Mythology. The book has different chapters and each of them explains a different myth. One example is the myth of Achilles’s heel. It all started with Achilles when he was born, his mom had decided that he would never die. She had carried him to a river named Styx, the river separated the land of the living [...]

    6. Gifts from the Gods: Ancient Words and Wisdom from Greek and Roman Mythology. Lise Lunge-Larsen (2011). Gifts from the Gods presents many stories from Greek and Roman myths about gods, goddesses, and heroes. The story that I found most interesting was Achilles Heel. A popular story told many times over, and this take on the story is not much different; though it remains a great classic. The story is of a Mother who is blessed with a son, Achilles. Knowing that her son is destined for greatness, [...]

    7. I love the author's book on "The Adventures of Thor, the Thunder God," so when I saw this book while trying to find some story books for my son, I picked it up. It is an interesting concept for a book. Yes it is on Greek/Roman mythology, but the author has decided to examine some of the stories through words that we use today and the god/goddess that gave the word to us via their story. Each word is defined at the beginning of each section, then there is a literary quote where the term is used, [...]

    8. Fabulous, fabulous educational tool. A YA foray into etymology, Gifts from the Gods shows how many modern words find their roots in Greek and Roman mythology. I especially enjoyed learning about Janus (i.e. janitor), the Roman god of hallways, doorways, beginnings and endings. Janus had two faces, one looking forward the other looking back. Oh Janitor, guardian of my hallways and keeper of the keys, I have a newfound respect for you!

    9. Gareth Hinds's illustrations really bring this package together of familiar characters from mythology. Would serve nicely in the secondary classroom as quick go-to references to word origins. I loved revisiting The Fates and how the three sisters were named by way of their role in the origins of a life.

    10. Stories of words inspired by gods, goddesses and other mythological creatures: janitor from Janus; museum from Muses; stamina from the Fates' strong thread of life, and many more. Fascinating facts about the word origins. However, not a good source for the myths themselves. This is more an identification and information book than a storybook.

    11. Judy Freeman recommended this book at her Best Books in Children's Literature workshop. It is amazing. I can see using it with those elementary kids who are obsessed with Greek and Roman and mythology, currently the third graders at my school. The stories our well told--it is easy to read this book straight through!

    12. Highly amusing!! This book takes the Greek and Latin myths and explains the origins of the words and phrases we use in our language today. For example, did you know the words museums and music come from the Muses?

    13. Great for the fourth grade common core standards.Full of facts my fourth graders will eat up.The illustrations in this book add so much to the text. Almost graphic novelish. This should have been a Caldecott : )

    14. Students are looking for new books about mythology. In the midst of the story, the author sneaks in a study of etymology and linguistics. Great blend of a high interest topic and the study of language.

    15. A wonderful look at words taken from Greek Mythology and the stories behind them. Gareth Hinds' illustrations are outstanding and kids will enjoy the classic stories behind words like "echo", "fortune", and "victory".

    16. Very interesting book about words in English that come from Greek or Roman mythology. Tells myths that explain origins. I can see my kids (especially my Percy Jackson fans) really getting into this one. Can't wait to tell them about it!

    17. Enjoyable and educating explanation of the origins in myths of several English words. Nicely written and wonderfully illustrated. Would appeal to a variety of ages, especially those who like mythology or etymology.

    18. A great book for understanding where different words came from. Lovely illustrations--but parents should flip through it first and decide if they are appropriate for their own kids.

    19. Fun romp through 17 words derived from Greek and Roman mythology. Illustrated by the incomparable Gareth Hinds. Must have for school and classroom libraries.
