    1. Antoine Rubinstein folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. He handed it to Jonas. "Have you told Evelina? Antoine asked as he peered over his egg-shaped reading glasses.Jonas hesitated in answering as he took the envelope. He wasn't prepared for that specific question. He looked down at his dull, brown shoes then back at his friend. He wanted to lie, but the deceiving words took too long to form."You have not, have you?" Antoine asked, disappointed in his friend. "Well, I think it [...]

    2. After reading The Haunting of Andrew Sharpai by Peterson, I didn't know what to expect when asked to review his latest. Indeed this historical literary novel was surprising even within the book itself as the story evolved! By the time I had finished, honestly, I did a search on the main female character's name to see if she really lived. That's how much she had become so real to me! But who knows, somewhere at some time, another young girl did exactly what Evelina did! If you enjoy historical no [...]

    3. Leaving Family Behindby Jerome PetersonStrategic Book Group 271 pagesstrategic book clubWhen Jonas Violettskus gets a letter confirming a job in America, he dreads having to relate this news to his outspoken, feisty younger sister, Evelina. It's all he faces and worse. She's furious and after browbeating her brother with insults she staunchly refuses to consider the idea. She has plans for her life that do not include sailing off as immigrants to a new and unknown land.Their parents, Petras and [...]

    4. Wow!There was more family drama in Leaving Family Behind then there is in daytime soaps!Leaving Family Behind was about siblings Evelina and Jonas Violettskus. Jonas, several years older than Evelina, worked with his dad in the family’s furniture making shop while dreaming of going to America to become a farmer. Evelina dreamed of studying music at the University and becoming a concert pianist while being tutored by a renowned pianist. With both parents dead, Jonas books passage aboard a ship [...]

    5. This is a beautiful story about family history and so much more; the immigrant experience. Siblings journey to a new life in America, escaping the rough living of Lithuania in the 1900’s. Evelina is sacrificing a future of fame and music when she leaves for America while her brother Jonas has a dream of resurrecting his family's farming roots but in America. The problem is he is as stubborn as their father was and knows he must force Evelina to come with him if he will see his dream come true. [...]

    6. It's been a while since I've read a good historical fiction, but this really hit the spot for me. Jerome Peterson writes a compelling tale about two young Lithuanians with separate, and often conflicting dreams. Being that I love character driven stories, I really enjoyed reading this story. Evelina was my personal favorite (I'm always a fan of the underdog). I really felt for her plight, and I couldn't help but root for her along the way. I wasn't as big of a fan of Jonas, but that was more for [...]

    7. While I applaud the author for tackling the emotional struggles inherent in being a poor immigrant coming to America 100 years ago, potential readers of this book should be warned about the awkward writing, lack of editing and general lack of craft in the creation of this book. The characters are sympathetic and the plot has enough twists and turns to hold one's interest, if you have the endurance to plow through poorly written sentence after poorly written sentence. Not only is language pretent [...]

I have not had the pleasure of reading such a story-telling tale for some time. The descriptions are so vivid and detailed I felt as though I was experiencing this adventure right along with the characters. Much research must have been put into this book. You feel the trials and heart-felt ordeals of folks making the scary trip to America and [...]

    9. Leaving Family Behind by Jerome PetersonThis is a wonderful story especially for someone who enjoys genealolgy/researching family trees. Althought it has nothing to do with that it will peak your interest if you into all that. Using a few details from the author's own family history, Jerome Peterson creates the dream and the reality of starting a new life in America. It's set in the early 1900's and a lot of hardship, patience and loss.
