    1. This is comprehensive; I don't know of a comparable treatment in scope and depth. It's academic, so a bit dry in style (these kind of books, surveys, tend toward the catalog). That said, there's enough of a narrative, but you have to be really interested in the intricacies of Middle East politics and history to follow the story.I haven't read other books on Syria, but this did help me understand today's politics, if only in terms of how the minority Alawites came to power and cemented their hold [...]
