    1. The storyline: Antara is a Fantasy Fairytale in classical style, with much adventure, magical elements, good versus evil and a good dose of romance. It is a completely original and unique tale; I am sure you have never heard or read a mermaid story like this one before. There is an island, where half of it is inhabited by “Merfolk” and the other half by humans. These two groups have co-existed in piece for many generations; until a huge catastrophe caused by mysterious sources strikes that p [...]

    2. This books deserves 3 1/2-4 stars.I have to admit that I was equally impressed by the story as well as the illustrations. When I started the book, I knew it had something to do with sea creatures, but was not sure what to expect. I was told by the author that it was a fantasy novel and I love those, so I started it. I liked the world that the author created. It was imaginative and reasonably original.Aster is an island where both humans and merfolk (sea creatures/mermaids) live. Humans live on the [...]

    3. QUICK THOUGHTS:Set during the Middle Ages where two kingdoms resided next to each other. One of humans that lived on a large island surrounded by a beautiful forest and the Merfolk that live in the ocean in the “White Palace”. After a terrible disaster struck the island killing many humans the two kingdoms friendship turned to hate, leaving the Merfolk saddened and the King an Queen disappeared not long after. Now the children of both kingdoms rule that lands, the young Merfolk Queen will do [...]

    4. This is a hard book for me to review. I want to separate it into two reviews. One for the story and one for the artwork. Therefore I think that is what I will doThe story is more of a young MG type of read. It is sweet and the adventure is a good one to get kids involved into fantasy. You have mermaids and a handsome prince on which to swoon. The world is sweet with just enough of scary to bring together the couple. The lesson in the book is a good one about not condemning someone or something w [...]

    5. Marilena Mexi and her debut novel, Antara, where a nice introduction into the mermaid's books. Is true that is not easy to write in a language that is not your mother tongue but Marilena's writing and descriptions are not only good but very enjoyable.Asteria is our main character, the queen of the merfolk and her world is in constant danger thanks to the humans who once were friends and allies. But not any more, now Orestis, king of Dark Aster, is always attacking and killing merfolks he doesn't [...]

    6. With 'Antara' Marilena Mexi makes her entrance to the publishing world; an entrance that is quite promising and shows that we can expect even greater things from the author in the future. I really enjoyed the story of the merfolk which goes a bit beyond what we usually encounter in fantasy fiction. A great plus were, of course, the amazing illustrations that accompanied the book, all made by the author. The story is likely to appeal more to fantasy readers and generally to a younger audience, al [...]

    7. Antara is a compelling story that has more the feel of a fable or fairy tale than that of your average mer-novel. This aura does not mean that it isn't as good as a regular novel; It is the feeling of a fable that makes Antara different and therefore enjoyable. In the Greek language, Antara means, among other things, disturbance or turbulence which perfectly describes the situation on the large island of Aster. The name of the island comes from the only kind of flowers that will grow there; Aster [...]

    8. Two worlds are at stake when a kingdom comes under attack by a force of nature so great it takes even the future king’s mother away in it’s wake. As these once friendly kingdoms continue to grow their animosity towards each other does as well especially that of King Orestis. Having lost his mother, King Orestis will do everything in his power to destroy the merfolk he believes are behind it. With only days before another mysterious attack is to happen the Queen of the merfolk, Asteria sets o [...]

    9. Source: Received from author courtesy of the Teen Book Scene. Many thanks goes to Marilena Mexi and Teen Book Scene for sending me a copy of this book for review. I received this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review. My rating: 3/5The land of Aster has been divided into two parts, one ruled by merfolk, and the other by humans. The people and merfolk of Aster were united peacefully at one time, but due to some devastating storms that return every five years, both have parted ways. [...]

    10. What I LikedHigh Fantasy WorldI was completely drawn into the beauty that is this world. The mermaids are peaceful and gentle creatures that live on both land and in the sea. They are beautiful loving and caring to no end. The beauty that Marilena creates with both the words and the pictures are breath taking and touching. I would love to be a part of this world she has created.CharactersAsteria Queen of the Merfolk (mermaid): A very gentle, kind, sweet and loving ruler of her people. She is wil [...]

    11. Interest: SynopsisTitle Thoughts: It fits perfectly. Cover Thoughts: Ii like it and how it has a sort of magical look to it. WARNINGS: None.I liked what the story was about and it's promise. I loved the illustrations. They were beautiful and really helped me imagine the island and the people in the story. I did like the story and the surprises that came along. I didn't see many of them coming. However, I couldn't really connect with the character and at times, they seemed to whine all the time. [...]

    12. This is really the first book I have read, as an adult that had pictures. I have to say that Ms. Mexi is an incredible illustrator. The pictures of the Mermaids and the Hidden Forest were simply amazing. With that aside, I honestly have to say that I was a little disappointed with the book. Although I truly enjoy the plot for its uniqueness, the typos were a bit distracting and it felt rushed a bit childish to me. Other than that, the book was pretty good and I did enjoy looking at the beautiful [...]

    14. This review should have been written quite some time ago. So, I rushed to finish the book, and I skimmed in some places so I could get through faster, as I really needed to get finished, but let me tell you, that didn't keep me from enjoying the book! It was amazing!!!Antara reads like a fairytale, sort of like a retelling of The Little Mermaid, but not quite. The mythology was very interesting, and I loved the descriptions of the mermaids and the merworld. The story talks about how everyone dese [...]

    15. I love mermaid tales! And this book had so much great adventure in it. I love that it had to do with Evil vs. Good. I also adored that it no matter what bad things happen to you in life, it is your choice how you want to live. The plot line of this book were great! I adored reading the plot line and seeing it unfold before my eyes. I love that the author, Ms. Mexi wrote a strong book about love and sacrifice. Cause I read about that all day! I enjoyed the plot line that it all boiled down to one [...]

    16. This was a quick light read although it dealt with real issues. Orestis has been taught to hate by his advisors, to blame the mer-people for his mother’s death, to cause great injustices against the merfolk. This spurs the princess of the merfolk to travel to the other side and act as a servant to the king. While attaining his trust they fall in love although both are fighting the attraction. The romance is a sweet one, the settings are described in beautiful detail, and the tale of ignorance be [...]

    17. Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I have been reading a lot of books lately because of my power outage and this was a really great one!!I really liked how this story was really original and very different then other mermaid stories that I have read. The only complaint that I have with this book is that it felt really rushed and I wish the story was dragged out a little bit more.Otherwise, I really enjoyed this book and I hope you all will too :)

    18. 3.5 starsWhen the author emailed me asking to review her book, I was instantly intrigued with the story. I've read a few other mermaid stories and really enjoyed them, and Antara had a really interesting premise to it.Once upon a time, humans and the merfolk were friends and lived in peace. Until one day, a massive storm destroyed most of the human land, and killed countless merfolk and humans. The humans blamed the merfolk for the destruction and since then, the two groups have been enemies. Ki [...]

    19. This should have been a graphic novel. Some absolutely beautiful illustrations merge with a poor story about a mermaid queen's quest to unite two warring kingdoms. Merfolk are hunted and killed by humans, who believe them responsible for gigantic waves that have devastated the human kingdom of Dark Aster. A plan is hatched: Queen Asteria will live among the humans and try to gain the favor of the human king to convince him the merfolk are no threat. Can she do so, especially when she finds hersel [...]

    20. Check out more reviews at bookstotheskyI really loved the idea of reading an illustrated novel just because I know that when an author develops characters they usually have a very clear picture of what their characters look like. The illustrations in this novel were just gorgeous, although in order to see them in color I did read this novel on my computer. Also, I had no idea that when I would look at the first illustrations it would be of mermaid nipples (I'm not opposed to nudity, I just was s [...]

    21. The story for this book was really good. However the thing that ruined this book for me the most was the poor editing. I understand that it was translated from Greek but I think a little more time should have been spent making the sentences flow better.Another thing that I didn't like was the dialogue. It seemed forced and childish. I really liked the characters but I had a hard time believing Asteria and the King's romance. It seemed like there wasn't enough between them to all of a sudden spar [...]

    22. The illustrations are gorgeous but the writing fell flat, especially with dialogue. It reads like a first draft and the characters feel shallow. This is disappointing because the ideas and world-building are great. I really wanted to like it and I will still probably pick up the rest of the series.

    23. DNF. Couldn't get into it despite trying numerous attempts. The artwork was pretty but the story was childish and hard to follow, I'm assuming because English is a second language in this instance.
