1 thought on “Casebook of the Black Widowers”

    1. Isaac Asimov, prolific science fiction author, also turned his hand to mysteries every now and then. He wrote full-length novels such as The Caves of Steel and The Robots of Dawn as well as short stories, including several collections which feature a fictional all-male club which convenes under the name of "The Black Widowers" for good food, good conversation, and a "grilling" of the latest guest. The members make a pretense of not looking for mysteries to solve, but, of course, they always wind [...]

    2. In this collection of short mysteries, Asimov showed the ability to create clever and complex plots capable of keeping you turning the page if only to find the solution. His characters are thin and forgettable, but the stories will keep you compulsively turning the page, and short enough to encourage just one more read.

    3. The series continues . . .If you liked the previous volumes of the Black Widowers mystery short stories, well, this one is more of the same. Each month, a guest comes to the Black Widowers' dinner club with a problem. Each month the members try to solve the problem, often with limited success. Eventually, Henry, the preternaturally insightful waiter comes up with an ingenious solution.Once again, a lot of the mysteries revolve around word-play, foreign languages and ideas or symbols that can hav [...]

    4. I like the Family man. Why is Halloween exactly like christmas. The middle name, although the solution is silly nice remarks of women. To the Barest, nice although the solution not convincing. Bruins? (9/10)

    5. It's difficult to categorize these stories. I had thought I was going to be reading a series of crime and murder mystery stories, but only three (I think) of the stories actually deal with such. Even then, they aren't whodunnits, as the perpetrator is not necessarily disclosed. What they are is a collection of witty and cleverly concocted conundrums about divers topics and with enough information given for the dedicated reader to work out the answer before Henry the waiter does so. Personally, I' [...]

    6. Another collection of stories concerning the Black Widower's club, a collection of greedy mates who are consistently made to look like mental midgets by their waiter, Henry. I swear, the biggest mystery of all is why Henry spends his days serving roast beef instead of running the world, but I tell myself we never see what he does in his off hours. I'm not usually too good with mysteries, but for once I got the answer to one of the stories before Henry did - or at least before he said he did, whi [...]

    7. 3.5 stars:Good, fun stuff. This book was made up of 12 short stories, but I enjoyed every one. In order to suck in his sci-fi fans, the book cover makes it sound like there are a couple futuristic stories, but in reality they're all set in, well, reality.Asimov did a good job of keeping me guessing, but I think a couple of his solutions are far-fetched. Then again, even the worst puzzle here is on a whole plane of "better" than any mystery I might come up with. I smiled often while reading this, [...]

    8. The weakest of the series, I think. The stories rely far too much on external knowledge, not clues given inside the story itself, which is weak. And many are set up in a rather dubious manner: in "The Family Man," the premise is given that a suspect's happy smile when mentioning Christmas ensures that he has children --- an absurdity, to say the least. On top of all that, some of Henry's solutions ("What Time Is It?," "To the Barest") are scarcely more credible than any of the other Widowers'. N [...]

    9. The third book of the series was the first I ever read. The others-allegedly better than this one- are on my 'to-read' list. But since I had nothing to compare 'Casebook of the Black Widowers' to, except other mysteries, I absolutely fell in love with it.The short stories are written perfectly, as is Isaac Asimov wont to. The plots are flawless and the solution to each mystery ingenious. Henry is better in real life than in reviews- I have managed to develop a huge crush on him.

    10. If you read one book in this series and like it you'll enjoy the others as all the stories are written in the same manner. On occasion the solution is a bit far fetched but they are all cleverly thought up and if you don't solve the mystery by the end you'll wind up thinking "now why didn't I think of that?" If you're a fan of detective mysteries you will enjoy this.

    11. I read for the same reason that most people watch movies - to relax. While it was a well written compilation of shirt stories, it was more like solving puzzles than relaxing.

    12. Fun little mysteries written in Asimov's approachable, friendly style. Not terribly deep, but one shouldn't crack open a book of short, formulaic stories expecting that anyway.

    13. These were fun, cute little mystery stories with fun characters. I bet they would be good vacation reading.
