    1. A complex and dark Japanese medieval mystery. 3.5 stars1552. Three shipwreck survivors wash up on the Japanese shoreline and are immediately embroiled in a struggle for lordship and supremacy amongst the Japanese clans.Jiro Tazeko, a classless samurai detective finds himself embroiled in the same unrest. The daughter of a lord's house has been murdered. One of the foreigners has been accused. However, Tazeko discovers some very odd facts, including the suspicion that the dead girl is not the Lady [...]

    2. Good book butLiked the story line of the drunk hero. But the book was sometimes difficult to follow. Nevertheless a good read.

A hard-drinking mercenary and master swordsman, he is looked down upon by his fellow samurai, thinking him without honor. Review: Well I finally made it to the end of a very long and interesting tale of a disgraced samurai whom likes to drink the sake….a lot. This was really good but wa [...]

    4. Trashy novel. As trashy novels, not a bad one, I suppose. The writing itself is very self-indulgent and could have used some editing, but in places definitely has flair. And I kept reading because the author succeeded in making me want to find out what would happen. Unfortunately, towards the end the novel jumps completely off the rails, and so "what would happen" turned out to be not worth the effort, in my opinion. Still, not without its pleasures.

    5. Richard Monaco has a large collection of great books under his belt. He mostly writes in the fantasy genre, but has written books in other areas like non-fiction crime and poetry. What blows me away most when I read Monaco is his confidence. I think this comes from years of writing well. His talent is something that he was born with, but clearly developed through hard work over the years. This book is a fine example of the confidence I mentioned above. I've read more books than I can count, and [...]
