    1. The Lonely Tiger was a wonderful collection of shikar stories set in the heart of India. After Allen got discharged from the British armed forces in 1942 for a head injury, he decided to buy a large estate in what became Madhya Pradesh in independent India. This book is a collection of anecdotes and experiences he had while running this estate. There are tales of tigers, leopards, monkey-snatchers, secret moonshine-brewers, and a rampaging boar or two.I've always loved shikar stories, there's an [...]

The 'Lonely Tiger' is a collection of stories by Hugh Allen who settled in India after Independence. It's almost like one day he just decided to sit down and write of all the animals he had shot. Another thing going against him was that Allen does not have the prose style of Corbett or Kenneth Anderson, well-known writers of this genre. His [...]

    3. One of the best book I have read so far. Sure to teach you much more about the forests than you can ever think of. Wonderful and humorous flow of words ensures perfect reading experience.

Allen gives a vivid description of the animals he encounters, and this makes the narrative more interesting. He hunts down on animals not for entertainment but out of sheer necessity. The book also provides an understanding of certain animal behaviours and also comments on the language of the jungles. It is a nice read and a must read for those who want to learn about wil [...]
