    1. It is a cute book, but it was badly edited. Page 40 (Florence Nightengale) has a typo - it should say she published her book in 1859 not 1959. On page 48, they claim the hearts of hibernating animals beat rapidly and blood scarcely flows - two contradicting statements. Heart rate slows for hibernation; how could they miss that? There is also some questionable grammar used, but I generally give that a pass for kids books. I think the terrible use of commas bothered me the most. Page 82 had the mor [...]

    2. Readers learn snippets of history while also reading about some of the animals that have gained fame over time. The book takes readers across the globe and back in time, all the way to Ramesses II with his lioness, all the way to today, with a profile of Cairo who was alongside the Navy SEALs when they located Osama bin Laden. Young readers will learn plenty of interesting facts about the 42 different animals celebrated here as double-page spreads contain brief text, including "Historical Stats, [...]

    3. A collection that highlights animals who have been companions/helpers of important historical figures or themselves historically significant. The book is arranged roughly chronologically starting in Ancient Egypt and ending with Cairo, a fairly recent canine hero. Each page spread has a brightly colored illustration of the animal, a poem explaining the historical role of the animal highlighted, and a list of various facts about the animal, historical period and/or historically-related person.A n [...]

    4. Historical animals makes for a fascinating, browsable topic. Bright, cartoonish illustrations provide visual interest. Double-page spreads keep information contained and organized. The poems distract and confuse and that space could have been put to better use. The overall lack of focus bothered me the most, and kept me from enjoying myself. Each spread purportedly featured a historical animal. But in reality, the topics bounced back and forth between animals and people. Some entries truly highl [...]

    5. subtitle Dogs, cats, horses, snakes, goats, rats, dragons, bears, elephants, rabbits, and other creatures that changed the world. Each entry gets a sort-of poem, a list of historical stats and other facts and an ugly painting. I don't like Jeff Albrecht Studios "art" style; somebody called it zany; maybe kids will like it. The poems are not very good. The stats and facts can be very interesting, many I already knew, but others were new to me.

    6. 3.5 stars but I rounded up. Really interesting facts about animals throughout history, however some of the animals were in fact humans, and not animals. Although you could make the argument that a human is an animal, but that is neither here nor there. The illustrations were a little too caricature for me but over all, I enjoyed the info that I did learn.

    7. 42 animals are presented with details for why they are famous and remembered in history. Cartoon illustrations.
