    1. As the only book-length study on Kubrick’s semi-forgotten masterpiece, this is essential reading. And when the author is dealing directly with the film/Thackeray’s novel, it’s spot-on. Unfortunately, she too often gets mired in pretentious, uninteresting academia, that adds nothing to an understanding or appreciation of either the film or the novel. Still, definitely worth a read if you’re a Kubrick whore like me.
