    1. The focus of these memoirs is intrigue. Spying, bribery, double-crossing and hiding behind screens to listen into secret confidential conversations fill the pages. It is a nuts and bolts account of politics and it feels a world away from the decorous, chivalrous parts of Froissart's Chronicles. This is a result of perspective. Froissart was spending time with the old gossips at different courts while Commynes was employed to go on confidential missions by Louis XI (having apparently been bribed [...]
