    1. This is an intriguing science fiction novelette with themes of love and sacrifice. It is a short read, and free, and has left me wanting to read her novel Machine, which sets out to explore the human-cybernetic identity space in much greater depth. In Captive Girl, Alice is a young woman who has been cybernetically modified so that her audio-visual senses are part of an advanced system scanning the heavens. When Alice was young, an invading force appeared out of nowhere, devastated the colony, le [...]

    2. Captive Girl is a very effective short story. It's available for free (I'll add the link when I'm next at my computer) or as part of a collection which I think I'd like to get, Unwelcome Bodies. It's short, but it contains all you need to know, leaving out what's unimportant or better left to the imagination. It's quite disturbing, in a way; this isn't a straightforward case of two women being in love. There's moral/ethical questions to chew on, and the author doesn't make a solid judgement abou [...]

    3. This story is beautifully written with characters that makes your heart bleed, and a story that will haunt your soul. Captive girl starts out as a brilliantly portrayed science fiction story that quickly takes an unexpected emotional turn, and ends with a heart wrenching sacrifice. And leaves all who read it with this one defining question How far would you go to be loved?

    4. This is NOT my kind of story. I was thoroughly creeped out. That said, it was well done and left the reader right in the middle of the moral dilemma along with Alice. No, I don't recommend it, but some will love it. I understand; but not me.

    5. Well that was strange, (good, because I like strange) very thought provoking, interesting and well written. I was, honestly, a bit creeped out by Marika but still intrigued and wanting to read more. I think it also covers a lot of topics for such a short story, from sci-fi to romance and psychology and I'd recommend it to everyone.

    6. Super creepy. I see the point of the story and it is certainly well-written, but the things the protagonist does for love are, like I said, super creepy.

    8. 3.5*Ugh. I think I would have rated this higher, if Pelland had pushed this just a bit further. I don't feel the ending was realistic. It's only a short term ending. Then again, someone living in that kind of psychological environment for so very long it's bound to leave mental scars. I don't want to get into it much further for fear of presenting spoilers. (I abhor them, so I don't like to leave them for others.) But it's an excellent story to spark conversation! I highly recommend reading this [...]

    9. I really liked the book. It's dark and tragic but at the same time passionate. It's about a darker kind of love - when love doesn't work "as it should". It is about society and it's expectations, about compromises and lonelinessIt would have gotten five stars, were it not for one thing - as a short story, it did not work as a complete story. When it came to the end, I felt like I had just read the prelude to a full length novel. It left me wishing for a continuation. So, Jennifer Pelland, if you [...]

    10. Reread this today and it's still brilliant. Heartbreaking and beautiful and sort of really twisted, this story never really left me, and remembering it this morning made me need to read it again.

    11. Not for me.This story made me feel nauseated. While it was written well enough, it did not draw me in. It was just sickening.

    12. Well written just so ewwwwww sickeningly twisted If you like dark, creepy and controlling, short stories - jackpot! Disturbing I get but sweet?? Though it is a story with impact!

    13. Totally illogical that they would have done this to a child and unnecessary removal of all outside stimuli to do the job.

    14. Glad this was a freebie, because I'm starting to think I already own this story (and have read it) in Pelland's UNWELCOME BODIES collection! Still, it's a good, creepy little story!

    15. This left me creeped out and unsettled and unhappy, but that was probably the goal. I'm not usually into dark stuff, but this was good.2.5
