    1. ‘All the poems I have written were written for love’.(W.H.Auden)As our local library essentially focuses its foreign poetry collection on (mostly flimsy) collections of love poetry, it seems like almost every encounter with a (non-Dutch) poet unapologetically first acquaintances me with a glimpse into their treatment of love – this another bilingual edition of ten poems on the apparently inexhaustible theme, as pretty obvious from the title poem, one of my favourites from this collection. [...]

    2. FUNERAL BLUESW.H. Simon Callow in ”Quattro matrimoni [...]

    3. Brodskij ci dice: "Leggete Auden nell'originale. È un suggerimento sensato, poche cose sono altrettanto sensate, perché in verità le poesie di Auden rendono più accettabile questa vita. Il dono di creare un tale effetto è raro nel nostro mondo, e conviene approfittarne."Leggete Auden, ma soprattutto leggetelo in inglese (l'edizione Adelphi ve lo offre). Se non avete intenzione di leggerlo in lingua originale, meglio che non lo leggiate affatto. Date uno sguardo veloce alla traduzione soltan [...]

    4. A selection of Auden's poems. Some editions include 10 poems. Mine includes 15: "O Tell Me the Truth About Love", "Song", "Underneath an Abject Willow", "Calypso", "Warm are the Still and Lucky Miles", "Carry Her Over the Water", "Deftly, Admiral, Cast Your Fly", "As I walked Out One Evening", "Lullaby", "Let a Florid Music Praise", "At Last the Secret is Out", "O What is That Sound", "Eyes Look Into the Well", "Johnny", and "Funeral Blues".Here are my favourite of those poemsSome say that love' [...]

    5. A true homage that we can do to this work is by reading another poem, but this one of Fernando Pessoa:Truer is Love than either LoverMy love, and not I, is the egoist. My love for thee loves itself more than thee;Ay, more than me, in whom it doth exist,And makes me live that it may feed on me.In the country of bridges the bridge isMore real than the shores it doth unsever; So in our world, all of Relation, thisIs true — that truer is Love than either lover. This thought therefore comes lightly to [...]

Wystan Hugh Auden (York 1907-Vienna 1973)

    7. Funeral BluesStop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,Silence the pianos and with muffled drumBring out the coffin, let the mourners come.Let aeroplanes circle moaning overheadScribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,Put crêpe bows round the white necks of the public doves,Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves. He was my North, my South, my East and West,My working week and my Sunday rest,My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;I t [...]

    8. While most poems fly over my head, Auden's poetry has always made sense to me. It's beautiful without being too abstract and it always seems to strike a chord for me. Auden had a wonderful gift for conveying emotion in only a few lines. This sweet collection includes one of my favorite poems, "Funeral Blues." Here's one section from the poem "He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last for [...]

    10. W.H. Auden witty wordplay and everyman voice spills from each page of this beautiful little edition of a collection of his poetry. I read this book over and again, enjoying the words and reading into each poem as I read it. There is a clarity to his writing that isn't always prominent in 30's poetry, and I enjoyed his small bursts of humour as well as a his darkened and torturous energy that often existed when the jokes were done. I will seek out more of Auden's work, for sure, because this was [...]

    11. A beautiful collection of poems about love and what it really means to love and be loved. I loved most of them, I cannot think of one I didn't enjoy! Totally recommend it to every poetry lover out there this is my favourite out of all of the poems, it's called "Oh tell me the truth about love" Some say love's a little boy, And some say it's a bird, Some say it makes the world go round,Some say that's absurd, And when I asked the man next door, Who looked as if he knew, His wife got very cross in [...]

    12. I think this is true for many people: their first introduction to the poetry of W. H. Auden was not through a classroom or casual reading, but through a film. In 1994, writer Richard Curtis quoted Auden’s poem Funeral Blues in his screenplay, Four Weddings and a Funeral. The popularity of that film exposed Auden’s work to millions, and saw Faber publishing a small book, Tell Me The Truth About Love, that included Funeral Blues, to cash inTTAL then contains the best romantic songs – and the [...]

    13. This is a selection of thirteen short poems, mainly concerned with the transience of love and youth. The most famous of which are, I guess, As I Walked Out One Evening, Lullaby, and Funeral Blues.Lullaby is probably a decent choice to sum things up thematically. The speaker lies with his sleeping lover and ruminates movingly on the passing of time: "in my arms till break of day / Let the living creature lie, / Mortal, guilty, but to me / The entirely beautiful."The forms are recognisable (one is [...]

Funeral Blues, O Tell Me The Truth About Love e O What Is That Sound sono le mie preferite, in assoluto. come cominciare bene il 2017!He was my North, my South, my East and West,My working week and my Sunday rest,My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong. The star [...]

    15. Only 15 poems in this collection but I utterly adored it. Love having my mind changed yet again about my poetry preferences :)

    16. Perhaps noticeable by my absence for a while. Saturday 6th January I was rushed to hospital; severe back pain turned out to be caused by a massive aortic artery aneurysm. Five hours later I was on the operating table - for 4.5 hours - on bypass, for a repair to the aorta. Six days of ICU and high dependency care. Discharged nine days ago and now on the long road to recovery. It has knocked me sideways and has (only temporarily I hope) ruined my love of reading. My enthusiasm is lost.Tell Me the [...]

    17. Ten unforgettable poems from the masterThis little volume 'Tell Me the Truth about Love' only contains ten poems, but the small number is easily compensated by the sheer warmth and authenticity of the ten pearls it contains. The poetry of W. H. Auden belongs clearly to one of the most beautiful created in the twenties century. It is never complex or high-flown, but gets its timeless charm exactly form its simplicity and remarkable honesty. Just to read that love does not look like a pair of pyja [...]

    18. Now this is what poetry should be like!I thoroughly enjoyed this collection although there was still the good, the meh and the amazing. Let me expoundTHE AMAZING:O Tell Me the Truth About LoveSongLullaby - I have loved this one since high schoolAt Last the Secret is OutTHE GOOD:Underneath an Abject WillowAs I Walked Out One EveningFuneral BluesTHE MEH:Calypso - although this was the husband's favoriteOh What is That SoundJohnnyDid you notice that there were no bad or ugly? Did you?

    19. If you think this book is filled with love poems, you'll be disappointed. There are a lot of similies and a lot of descriptions of folk in love. At most it's about the loss of love (in death), or how people talk about love, e.g. when gossiping. In "At last the secret is out"(page 25) Auden writes: "Under the look of fatigue, the attack of migraine and the sigh / There is always another story, there is more than meets the eye" how true! I think it's Anne Sexton who once wrote that love cannot be [...]

    22. "Oh, rimani, rimani alla finestra/ mentre bruciano e sgorgano le lacrime;/ tu amerai il prossimo tuo storto/ con il tuo storto cuore"/

    23. Some say love's a little boy, And some say it's a bird, Some say it makes the world go round,Some say that's absurd, And when I asked the man next door, Who looked as if he knew, His wife got very cross indeed, And said it wouldn't do.Does it look like a pair of pyjamas, Or the ham in a temperance hotel? Does its odour remind one of llamas, Or has it a comforting smell? Is it prickly to touch as a hedge is, Or soft as eiderdown fluff? Is it sharp or quite smooth at the edges? O tell me the truth [...]

    25. Heartfelt poems that are often written in simple prose, yet complicated and profound in allegory. A master wordsmith and weaver of great rhyme, who was also capable of giving a beat to his work using complex rhythms by using unconventional word structures. The subject is, as you'd imagine, about love, but of course, by extension, loss, redemption, and questions of human existence can also be felt in his love poetry too.

    27. What girl or mom could say no to love poems I ask you?! Well, even in the midst of our heartbreak love can still grow and encourage.

    29. "He was my North, my South, my East and West,My working week and my Sunday rest,My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong."Penetrante.
