    1. This is one of the most popular Swedish children's stories of all time. Alfons, about five, wants to play with Dad's toolbox, but Dad just sits and reads the newspaper. Every now and then, without listening to a word of what Alfons is saying, he reminds him that he's not allowed to use the saw. Alfons, who's got plenty of common sense, doesn't use the saw. But he's good with a hammer, and even though he hits his thumb a couple of times he builds the thing you can see on the front cover. When Dad [...]

    2. One of my absolute favorite books for kids. I bought it in English for my host children here in California, and my brother has it in Swedish back home too. Alfie Atkins (or Alfons Åberg) is just simply the best and my absolute favorite to read to kids.

    5. A wondrous tale of creativity, parental neglect and a potentially dangerous playtime. Is it worrying that Albert's father is too busy reading the paper to pay attention to his five-year old playing with sharp objects, who eventually almost shuts himself into the helicopter he's building? Yes.Is it a fabulous display of childhood before the age of the iPad that you should probably read to your kid who will grow up playing video games?Absolutely.

    6. (Read with little sister as part of the "1,001 Children's Books To Read")I really didn't care for the illustrations, but that was actually a really cute story.
