I had read Donald Gilmore's book, Civil War on the Missouri-Kansas Border, several years ago and was really impressed by his level of detail and extremely pro-Missouri view (I'm from Missouri myself) of the turbulent border war pre-dating the Civil War. I appreciate his desire to move beyond history and extend in the fictional realm to 'fill in the blanks' of how he perceived how the outlaws thought and felt and how the people interacting with them reacted.
